Spode Christmas Tree Dinnerware
Spode Christmas tree dinnerware is a Christmas pattern for fine china that goes back one hundred years or more. The dinnerware set style that we see today was introduced in 1938 with dinner plates, salad plates, and mugs in the set. Until recently this dinnerware was made in England. Lately production of these plates has shifted to Asia, i.e. Malaysia or China. Asian production of these plates has introduced a number of concerns. First, many consumers say the dinnerware is no longer being produced of fine china quality. The quality of the glazing is not what it used to be and is especially noticeable on the backs of plates. The particular shade of the color red is different. The texture of the Christmas tree can be felt by the hand, and on the old china it could not. If a person owns original Spode Christmas tree plates and this person wanted to add to their collection, the newer pieces would not be an exact match. For the discriminating collector, they may need to haunt antique shops or eBay to try to find the original Spode Christmas tree dinnerware, and let the buyer beware. Another more serious concern is a health concern about the possibility of lead in the china. This may be true for older pieces and also the more recent Spode dinnerware, so the consumer may want to buy a lead home test kit to test their old dinnerware. For the consumer who merely likes the appearance of the Christmas tree pattern and wants to have some nice dishes on their table for one or two meals a year, the Spode Christmas tree dinnerware sets that are sold today will probably do just fine. |
